| Why Hair Loss Occurs Is Hair Loss Hereditary? Yes, hair loss can be hereditary but while a hereditary disposition to hair loss is something you are born with, it is further accelerated to a great degree by many other factors that are in your control. Many people have asked "How can this be? Everyone knows male pattern baldness and female pattern balding is hereditary." Hairloss is really only now being understood now. This new information and the access to this information was not available 20 years ago to your parents and grandparents. This gives you a distinct advantage over them. You must understand that hair loss prevention and re-growth is in your control whether it is in your family genes or not. Much of the so-called genetic hair loss can be stopped. A Healthy Scalp Understand that the first step to stopping hair loss and growing new hair is creating a healthy scalp. Your scalp is like the ground that a flower grows from. If that ground is polluted, the plant will grow weak and die fast or not grow at all. The same concept applies to your hair growth. Science has many theories concerning mens and womens hair loss and balding, but the following accepted theories are the ones that we hold to be most accurate. Sebum Contamination A major cause of hair loss is the mixture of micro-pollutants, hair care product residues, and Sebum clogging your hair follicle entrance. Sebum is an oily substance produced by your skin. Sebum actually plays an important role in the health of your scalp, but overproduction of Sebum caused by stress (this is a major cause of hair loss in women) and a diet high in animal fat creates excess Sebum secretion. When the sebum leaves your underlying scalp layer, it reaches the surface of your scalp and mixes with the dirt and hair care product residues. Because the sebum is now on your scalp and exposed to air, it hardens (oxidizes) and creates a thick, black, tar like substance. This hardened substance clogs your hair follicle entrance. The bacteria in this substance damages the follicle and is one of the major causes of hair loss. (For those of you who do not know, the hair follicles are the millions of little canals in your scalp in which your hair grows from.) After years of this occurring (your whole life), the tar-like material becomes impacted in the follicle. The result is blockage of nutrient absorption to the follicle, thus impeding hair growth. This type of problem is a major hair loss cause that can be stopped. Hormones and DHT The most damaging process in hair loss occurs next. Your body naturally produces the hormone testosterone. It happens in everyone. When testosterone mixes with the Sebum/dirt substance that is now impacted in your follicle, it creates a powerful substance called DHT. DHT is the real enemy of hair growth and retention. When formed, DHT causes the follicle to begin shutting down, and basically, the follicle dies a slow death. This type of hair loss is commonly known as Androgenetic Alopecia. What makes this worse is that your bodies immune system senses the follicle is dying, and as part of its defense system, tries to further shut it down and get rid of it (as it would a cold or flu). What effect does a dying, clogged follicle have on an actual hair strand? If you pulled out a hair strand from your follicle, and looked at the root end of the hair strand under a microscope, you would see the hardened sebum/dirt substance on the root of the strand (We encourage you to do this so you can see for yourself!!). What you are seeing is just a small amount of this material. The rest of it is in the hair follicle. At the root of every strand of hair is a bulb. On a healthy strand of hair, the bulb is nicely rounded. This healthy round shape is like a strong root, the larger the bulb, the more firmly your hair is rooted in your follicle. When Sebum builds up in the follicles, it deteriorates the bulb of the hair. Slowly, the bulbs get smaller, less round, and because of this, your hair is not rooted as well and the hair strand falls out. Then another hair strand grows from the follicle, but this hair strand is thinner and weaker than the last one. Because of Sebum cloggage and the fact that the dying follicle can not provide nutrients, the new hair strand must fight its way through the follicle, causing the hair strand to be thinner and the bulb smaller. This process repeats itself, with the next hair getting thinner and the bulb smaller each time the old one falls out. This is why most men and women experience thinning hair as they are losing it. The unfortunate ending is a hair follicle so damaged from Sebum, bacteria, and DHT production that the follicle dies. Poor Circulation and Stress Poor circulation in your scalp, due to stress, also causes hair loss. The fact that the head is the highest point on your body and the most difficult place for your body to supply blood flow to is one thing, but a tight scalp due to stress will also constrict your scalp's blood vessels and cause vital nutrients to not make it to your follicles. Most of us live somewhat stressful lives, but dealing with stress head-on is important. Don't ignore it. Unfortunately, our products cannot relieve the problems of your life. Stress can be dealt with in many ways, most notably through exercise, adequate sleep, healthy relationships, healthy diet, and techniques like relaxation exercises and yoga. What
